High tea has come a long way, baby. Long gone are the days of mere cucumber sandwiches and overly-milked earl grey. Just like a good cuppa, the concept of high tea has brewed longer and become stronger, it’s taken a welcomed step towards the indulgent and evolved into a more adventurous beast.
These days, it wouldn’t be out of the norm to sip cocktails and share a bottle of bubbles at high tea, not to mention gorge on a selection of French desserts, tarts, cakes, pastries and canapés. And if you actually want a cup of tea, bold and bright single region Ceylon teas are the standard and don’t be surprised if you see something fancy like Elderflower and Babylon Infusion on the menu.

But where to next?
Following a brainstorm in a tea cup, the Hippopotamus crew have put their hand up. Someone sheepishly suggested blending comedy and high tea together and in a so-crazy-it-might-just-work moment, it’s been green-lighted.A comedian hosting a high tea. Sure, why not?
The comedian in question is the hilarious, Urzila Carlson. While teas (delicious cocktails/mocktails) are sipped and sandwiches (divine petit fours and sweet treats) are nibbled, the South African born comic, writer, MC and TV funny person will be bringing the comedic fire. Carlson will read excerpts from her book, ‘Rolling with the Punchlines’, personally, spend time with each table and might even enjoy a tipple.
Book signings and selfies are definitely an option. Who knows, you might even befriend the adopted Jafa and really make a night of it… after all, there are plenty of places across town that serve a version of “tea”.
QT High Tea with Urzila Carlson will take place May 6 at Hippopotamus at QT Museum Wellington. Limited places available, so book early.
