Emeline, hello! Tell us about yourself – how did you become Perrier-Jouët’s Champagne Ambassador?
I was born and raised in the vineyards of Cognac, France, which greatly influenced my passion for the world of wine and spirits. With a deep appreciation for discovering terroir and traditional savoir-faire, becoming the Perrier-Jouët Champagne Ambassador was a remarkable opportunity to immerse myself in the universe of Champagne, continuously developing my passion and knowledge in this captivating industry.
Tough job, but someone’s gotta do it. What makes Champagne Champagne?
Champagne is truly exceptional and defined by its distinctive characteristics. The combination of the region’s soil, subsoil, and carefully cultivated grapes, coupled with the profound understanding and expertise of our dedicated winegrowers, sets it apart. This effervescent elixir can only bear the prestigious label of Champagne when crafted within the meticulously delineated area in France. Beyond this exclusive geographical boundary, it would be categorised as a sparkling wine.
Our Gallery Lounge has been transformed into an enchanted garden for the Flora & Fizz takeover. Tell us about the influence of nature on Perrier-Jouët?
Nature has been an enduring muse for Perrier-Jouët throughout its rich history. Our founders, Mr. Perrier and Mrs. Jouët, shared a profound passion for both art and nature, and this legacy remains the cornerstone of our house. A striking testament to this connection is the iconic Belle Époque vintage cuvée, a masterpiece we have meticulously crafted since 1967. Instantly recognizable by the exquisite floral motif adorning each bottle, the white anemone from Japan was carefully chosen by Master of Art, Emile Gallé. This choice pays homage to our enduring love for nature, creating a captivating fusion of artistry and the natural world in every sip.
There’s an art to tasting Champagne, talk us through the process of a tasting – what should we be looking for in Champagne?
Tasting Champagne is indeed an art, engaging multiple senses to fully appreciate its nuances. Begin by observing the effervescence, noting the size and persistence of bubbles. Swirl the glass gently to release the bouquet, allowing the aromas to unfold. Take a moment to inhale, identifying the delicate notes of fruits, florals, and subtle yeastiness. Upon the first sip, assess the balance between acidity, sweetness, and richness on the palate. Note the texture – Champagne often displays a fine mousse and a silky mouthfeel. Pay attention to the lingering finish, savouring any complexities. In essence, a Champagne tasting is a sensory journey!
