Cindy Sherman

When the talent of a human make you feel you should be a better human by following your own dreams, you know you’re onto a good thing.

When that talent is photography, and the model is the talented human in question, you begin to question your own skill set.

I struggle taking a good selfie, yet Cindy Sherman has created a body of work that throws light on social ideas of female appearance, narcissism and cult of celebrity by shooting herself.

The exploration of the narcissistic human trait, while shooting yourself as the model, holds a level of meta that’s hard to handle, though there is something delicious about it.

Since November 19 last year, the exhibition, aptly named, Cindy Sherman has been taking up residence in the City Gallery Wellington and focuses on the last 17 years of work that has come from the mind of Sherman.

The works show off Sherman’s ability to transform her appearance in order to poke a pop culture shaped stick at the human condition, making her one of the most influential artists living today.

Sherman’s style plays with the concept of a film still and having the character looking anywhere but down the barrel of the camera, creating a fly on the wall feel.

With this new exhibition, the use of digital effects has given a new twist to her artwork, without killing off what is so good about her style.

If you are looking for more reasons to catch this showing before it leaves town, King of Pop Culture, Mr Andy Warhol once said ‘She’s good enough to be a real actress’… WHAT MORE DO YOU NEED TO HEAR.

But seriously, tickets are just $12 and can be picked up from HERE.

Cindy Sherman is at the City Gallery Wellington until March 19.
