Who are the people of Bondi? Sit outside any café or bar and people watch and you’re going to stumble across a wonderfully diverse Allen’s Party Mix of individuals, that’s a guarantee.
Which Insta-famous model are you going to see sexily sprawled out poolside when you go for a dip at Icebergs? And which Insta-wannabe will be posing at the cliffs, courageously holding a stare-off with the horizon, their photographer capturing an “impromptu” moment in time from the perfect spot just a few metres away?
There are the tourists looking for a taste of this iconic part of Sydney. Some are cashed-up and indulging in the finer sides of Bondi, and others are on the backpackers’ trail, here to conquer a drunken rite of passage in a party-centric town.
The odd Hollywood celeb pops up every now and then. There’s been Oprah, Biebs, Sienna Miller, Wolverine, Thor and more recently, Will Smith, to name a few. And with teams like the Women’s Sevens, Roosters, Waratahs and Buddy Franklin’s mighty Sydney Swans running training and post-game sessions around Bondi, there are more local sporting idols to be spotted than you can throw a Steeden at.
The locals range from forever-photogenic active wear advocates and namaste’ing yoga mat warriors to boutique-is-best farrrshionistas. There’s a salty contingent made up of surfers, swimmers, sun tanners and the famous Bondi Lifeguards; and the abs-on-display flex heads pushing out dips at the outdoor beach gym. They all sip espresso, eat out and drink late in a town obsessed with café culture, strong menus and trendy bars.
Of course there’s the other group of true blue long-time locals that don’t stand out as much and don’t fit into these blatant (and obviously tongue in cheek) generalisations, and that’s just the way they like it.
