Moonlight Cinema

Jan 11, 2016  ·  3 min read

By Niall Roeder.

It’s summertime… and in movie talk, that means it’s season de la blockbuster. There are plenty of very different movies out at the moment; 90s surfing/bank robbing remakes, a De Niro and Efron comedy (…at last), historical feminist foot soldiers in action, DiCaprio vs grizzly bear and space battles in a galaxy far, far away. We are of course referring to Moonlight Cinema, the silver screen that sets up shop on the lawns of the Belvedere Amphitheatre in the iconic Centennial Park.

The films being shown this year are not just new releases like Creed, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Suffragette and Spectre, oh no. There’ll be many a cult classic being shown too, like Top Gun, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and Grease.

It’s not just the variety of films that should be getting you excited; it’s the form in which you can view them. Tell me, what’s better than watching a film inside your sweaty home? The answer is watching it outside, under the stars, in the sweet and arousing summer air. Now chuck in a picnic blanket, some booze and nibbles and you’ve got yourself a recipe for one sexy night.

You can of course indulge in the grub (Korean fried chicken sliders, chilli cheese dogs, nachos and more) and swill (Heinekens, Batlow ciders, Canadian Clubs, barrels of Lindeman’s white, red and sparkling vino and more) being sold at the venue, but you can indeed bring you own as well. As an experienced nibbler, let me suggest bringing the following assortment of flavours to graze on:

Cheese – Brie, vintage cheddar, blue, old English, fetta, Gouda… the more cheeses, the better. After the movie, just imagine the wild and wonderful cheese dreams you’ll have. Embrace them.

Crackers – Every person is different and not everyone likes the same crackers… so don’t be tight and get an assortment.

Quince paste – Take a leaf out of the Latino flavour book and eat slices of this sweet, gelatinous log with your cheese… exquisite.

Grapes – There’s a reason why the kings of old were always getting fed grapes… because they taste good, they’ve got a pleasurable shape and texture… and they’re regal. Get grapes.

Dips – Hummus, something pesto-related and a beetroot based dip should have you and your nibbles covered nicely.

Carrot sticks – For the dips… c’mon mate.

Chocolate – If you’re still on milk chocolate and you’ve over the age of 20, you need to grow up. Get something 75% cocoa or above and welcome yourself to adulthood.

Guacamole– Homemade of course. Everyone does it a little differently. If you don’t know, smash some avo, add some lemon juice, salt and pepper and coriander… now you know.

Picnic Tip: Cover your guac in thinly sliced lime to keep it bright green! Thanks for the life hack @jjldetox
