First Base is a label born on Bondi Beach that needs no introduction. If you’ve seen babes rocking cheeky slogan tees, killer bikinis and muscle tanks then you should know that there’s a good chance that the badass behind those goods is Ali Cotton, who originally hails from WA but calls Bondi home.
Cotton started First Base at a time when she felt she needed a new start, something most of us have felt at some stage. Impressively, she actually did something about it. The idea was to take her love of surf and skate culture and create something that was simple and ultimately iconic, just like Bondi Beach – great basics with a sportswear slant.
We caught up with her and shot her a few questions…
How long have you lived in Bondi?
Six years next month. It’s definitely my home on the east coast.
What do you love the most about living here?
Everything! I love being close to the beach. That’s one of the most important things for me to be happy in life.
How has Bondi influenced your business?
It’s been a huge influence. Bondi has its own style, culture and scene. It has such a great energy and the array of lifestyle options are endless. First Base is centred very much around the Bondi lifestyle and blending my love of the ocean with laid back athletic style.
Best coffee in Bondi?
I’m actually one of those people that don’t drink coffee. Lame I know. But chai tea, that’s my poison. So best chai I would say is at Lox Stock or Organics.
Where’s the best place to shop in Bondi?
Tuchuzy. That’s a no-brainer. Credit card debt is always guaranteed when you walk in there.
First Base is a cult favourite amongst Bondi locals, with its clean lines and classic wearability each piece is an investment. Check out their Instagram for a peek into the lives of the surf-loving chicks who are all about empowering women and teaching you how to break the rules of modern fashion.
