QUEENSTOWN’S DESIGNER HOTEL, QT QUEENSTOWN

Posted on: 29 November 2017

Introducing Queenstown’s newest designer hub, primly positioned overlooking the world-renowned New Zealand Southern Alps and majestic Lake Wakatipu. QT Queenstown sits pretty in nature’s playground. Indulge the senses with design sensibilities led by interior designer Nic Graham, complemented by carefully curated graphics from Fabio Ongarato and in-room stylings by Anna Roberts. The trio of long standing QT collaborators take local context, quirk & intrigue to evoke an unmistakably QT lifestyle destination.

QT Queenstown’s eclectic spaces dare guests to adventure into the wild or enjoy the beautiful tranquillity of Queenstown. From the views across dramatic mountain landscapes, to the personal, intimate moments taking in the serenity of Lake Wakatipu, Queenstown is a canvas upon which every individual can choose their own adventure.

The property’s interior evokes a signature QT sense of place. Graham created the interiors for a myriad of spaces, Ongarato designed environmental graphics which draw back to the identity narratives and Roberts delivers the design journey within QT Queenstown’s 69 guest rooms and suites.

Namesake and leading the charge of the multi-disciplinary design studio Fabio Ongarato Design, Ongarato developed the identity, art direction brief and suite of collateral for QT Queenstown, including signage and interior graphics for the property.

His work is evident upon entering the Lobby and elevators, as  guests will be greeted with QT’s tongue-in-cheek interpretation of the landscape – saturated colours, vintage characters and emphasis on summer and winter sports in the form of a custom graphic, a collaboration between Graham and Ongarato. The unapologetic graphics upon every entry plays on the notion of Mother Nature meets modern design. From the custom graphic wrapping around the Lobby walls to the mixed series of mountainscapes formed out of human bodies as you enter the elevator; an amalgamation of hips and breasts, with skiers superimposed – whatever QT does there’s always a little bit of sass and sexiness.

The interior graphics captures Queenstown’s unique environment through a series of beautiful and inspiring moments which sets the tone for a visually intriguing and innovative design-led hotel experience. About the concept Ongarato says, ”it reveals a multitude of experiences and individual memories, each told from the perspective of awe inspiring scenery. We celebrate the diverse appeal of the area, its rich and dynamic landscape of journeys waiting to be explored.”

The hallways of QT Queenstown are a visual canvas. Nic Graham custom designed the QT Queenstown carpet which runs throughout the guest corridor. Taking his usual bold, graphic approach, the carpet cleverly reinvents a combination of contemporary digitised snowflakes, leaves, flower and mountain shapes. Adjacent to the carpet, journey along the hallway into guests’ rooms alongside the exaggerated painted dado mimicking the horizon of the Southern Alps.

Industrial chic statement pieces in the Lobby, such as the suspended fireplace, is the perfect example of the harmony between vintage and contemporary which is prevalent in all QT Hotels & Resorts. The cast iron feature is a sculptural piece, adding visual appeal with a vintage mid-century mix, giving QT Queenstown its eclectic style.

Bespoke furniture, provocative graphics, and a strong use of colours – whilst still incorporating signature QT quirk, provoking visual interest. Vintage elements blended with modern, concrete abutting brass and bronze, and floral against pattern are some of the design highlights adding detail to the space. Guests will enter and exit the public areas which communicate a sense of nature, freedom and adventure.

Anna Roberts continues her collaboration with QT Hotels & Resorts – be welcomed by works by local artists and produce, truly bringing a piece of the community for the guest sanctuaries.

QT’s quirky mini-bar hold local treasures such as sweets  poured 200 metres down the road by the iconic Remarkables Sweet Shop to socks have been stitched using the wool from the local merino sheep. The essence of Aotearoa’s fauna and flora have found a place in items such as sculptural ceramic objects in New Zealand’s native Tui bird. Everything from popcorn to pineapple lumps have been carefully curated, using the best of Central Otago produce.

“The best experiences in NZ are found, when you get to know a local who knows the land. From the woman who spins yarn for us in Arrowtown, to the man on the North island who hand crafted pieces of our rooms”, says Roberts on curating the QT Queenstown guest experience.

Adding to the QT Queenstown’s design experience is the hotel’s staff. The ‘costumes’ have been ingeniously designed by renowned costume designer Janet Hine, who is well-known for her costume design at Granada Media and Costume Couture. Creating theatrical attitude, staff outfits complement the playful and cutting-edge style of the hotel, impacting guests’ right from arrival.

QT Queenstown joins an acclaimed family of designer hotels, building on a global reputation for bold interiors and luxury but quirky hospitality. Spotlighting a range of unique design and art collaborators, QT Queenstown brings all of the tongue-in-cheek quirk you’ve come to expect when immersing yourself in the QT life from 1 December 2017.
