Were you in Sydney during the ‘90s? Does that era bring back sweetly nostalgic memories of sweaty fist-pumping on packed dance floors? Were Superstylin’, Cosmic Girl and Rose Rouge your jams? If so, you probably found yourself at or at least heard of Bondi’s legendary day party, Vibes on a Summers Day.
Vibes kicked off in ‘94 and was the original all day summer dance party at the Bondi Pavilion. It had live performers and DJs pumping a blend of lounge, funk, soul, hip hop, house, breaks, reggae and dub, and proudly booked acts like Jamiroquai, St Germain, Propellerheads, Norman Jay, Groove Armada, Jose Padilla, M.J. Cole and Rae & Christian. From the heaving Pavillion parties it morphed into a touring festival beast, with over 90,000 people Vibing across Australia and New Zealand over the years… and then POP! In 2002, amidst whispers that the one time cult favourite fiesta had expanded too far and as a result had lost its intimacy and charm, the pin was pulled and Vibes was no more. Until now.
This January, Vibes on a Summers Day makes its triumphant, sun soaked, eargasmic return, and with it brings Soul II Soul’s Jazzie B, house pioneers Faze Action, soul sensation Kylie Auldist (The Bamboos), Nu Disco guru Dr Packer, the UK’s groove boss Russ Dewbury and Beat Spacek, original London rude boy Spikey T, Sydney hell-man Simon Caldwell, DJ Hudge, Katalyst, JC, Sugar Ray, Phil Smart, Crucial D, Joe90, Ph and Frenzie.

There are still some tickets left, but you’d better jump on them quick if you’re keen to go. The Vibes kids refuse to make the mistake many parties do these days – the oversell. There’ll be plenty of space to boogie and manageable lines, but fewer tickets than once upon a time, so we repeat, jump on it now.
Beats. Beers. Bondi… With Australia Day falling on a Tuesday this year, you may as well give it a nudge this weekend.
