By Ben Stephens.
‘To market, to market, to buy a fat pig’, the opening line of poem that first surfaced in 1598, the curly tail end of the 16th century. What does it all mean though, is it just an ode about purchasing a hog? Anchoring itself some 400+ years ago, perhaps it shows our love for a village market… and bacon.
But, enough historic segues! I want to discuss the passion that Bondi holds for the weekend markets. The weekend markets that take over the Bondi Beach Primary School in the beachside bubble.
Happening every weekend, the market festivities kick things off at the ripe old hour of 9am on Saturday morning, celebrating Bondi Farmers Markets and the farm fresh goods on offer from our locals farmers. When you’re in need of those artisan treats, like honey fresh off the comb or cheese with a bite, the Bondi Farmers Markets will fill up your cupboard with everything you need.
Hot Tip – you’ll want get down there early to grab your goods and then a spot on the grass to enjoy all the breakfast possibilities on offer, like a bacon and egg rolls or huevos rancheros… or a donut.
Sunday still offers a number of delicious food options, though the real focus is on the fashion and artworks, this is it where Bondi really comes out to show off the local talent. The Bondi Markets have been a thing since ’93 and have been the launching pad for so many Aussie brands with the likes of Zimmerman, Speedos and Sass & Bide starting off in the couture-nurturing grounds. You never know what you’ll find down here on Sunday, most likely it’ll be that one off piece that you’ll be hard pressed to find anywhere else.
The markets always bring with them a strong sense of community and make you feel immersed in the Bondi life, whether you come for the market of the fat pig.
Bondi Farmers Markets are on every Saturday from 9am – 1pm and the Bondi Markets are on every Sunday 10am – 4pm.
