A night at Taqiza Mexican

words by alex robertson

If you’re one of those suspects that doesn’t eat Mexican food, you need not read on. Though if you’re one of those legends that gets a serious kick out of tacos, hot sauce and tequila then the following words will get your juices flowing.

Let’s be honest, most people love a burrito or a taco but when you’re serious about tacos you will know there’s an extensive difference between Westernised Mexican and a legitimate authentic Mexican feed. It just so happens that there is a new hombre in town and he’s got this nailed.

Taqiza Mexican is the new kid on the block, bringing some serious authentic Mexican flavours to our very own Glenayr Ave, Bondi Beach. The brains behind the operation say the creative menu is inspired by the paradoxical realities, rich gastronomic history, freshness and vivid colours of contemporary Mexico.

After my first Taqiza experience just recently I could not agree more.

As I walked up to the entrance of the tiny Glenayr shop-front I was pleasantly surprised at their ingenious use of such a small space. The front window has been decked out with cool little perch complete with mini drink tables, which makes for a great little spot for a taco and a Mezcal Margarita.

As you walk through the door there is more internal window seating to your right and a couple of steps behind that you will see a central bar which is surrounded by more formal dining tables and chairs. The small bar impressively pumps out the food and beverages for the whole restaurant and being such a small venue the wait time of food is very reasonable.

Now, let’s talk food….

We had a table of 10 so we went for the ‘pick a bunch of dishes and everyone just graze’ approach. We started with a couple of Tuna ceviche bowls and some good ol’ Guacamole. The Guac wasn’t just any Guac – It was a delicious classic avocado base that was then topped with ancient grains, queso fresco and pomegranate, it had us all licking the bowl clean.

Next off we moved onto the Tacos!!

All tacos came in a flavoursome corn tortilla so for all of you gluten free ninos out there (like myself) this is an absolute dream. In fact, the whole menu can be made gluten-free! Our taco spread included Pulled pork, Free range chicken, Beef cheek, BBQ salmon, Barramundi, Roast pumpkin and Ox tongue for the more adventurous of the bunch. I would love to say there were some definite standouts to make your life easier but they were all so damn tasty. If I had to choose though I would award the winners to the pulled pork w/pibil marinade, caramelised pineapple & habanero pickled onion OR the Barramundi w/pastor sauce, pickled cabbage, pineapple salsa & pomegranate mojo! DROOOOOOL!

Moving onto the Mains – We were all so excited about how great everything had been so far, we just had to get one of each of the three menu items they had on offer. The Beef Skirt w/ steak, corn masa base, refried beans, tomatillo sauce, queso fresco, heirloom tomatoes, pickled onion & radishes, The Confit Duck breast w/ hoisin-chipotle glaze, Mexican pickles & tortillas and The Grilled Octopus w/chorizo, zarandeado sauce & creamy corn salad. The Occy was a stand out for me but for the meat lovers, the Beef and the Duck were cooked to perfection and full of all those Mex fusion flavours.

Last but not least, Dessert & Drinks – We tried both the Avocado & Choc Mouse and the Horchata Infused Tapioca. Both traditional Mexican desserts and both rocked our worlds! The impressive drinks menu was filled with classic cocktails with a twist, local wines, imported beers and the best part… There’s about 20 different Mezcal and Tequila’s to choose from.

All in all, it was possibly my favourite recent dining experience in the bubble and I can’t wait to recommend Taqiza to our guests and QT amigos and familia.

Let the fiesta begin!
